My connection to travel:

Have you ever felt like there were parts of yourself you had to hide, like these qualities didn’t fit in with the people around you?

That’s how I grew up feeling, too.

When my family took me on a trip to Mexico in third grade– I knew I’d stumbled into something spectacular. The culture was lively, vibrant, and full of joy– a lot different than the calm and low-key demeanor of many in the USA.

This was the first time I realized it was okay to be different than the norm.

From that point on, I began to seek out people different than me.

I continued to travel the world… many times to Mexico, and then venturing off to South America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

And I celebrated their differences.

Like…

  • Watching Guatemalans diligently prepare tissue-paper murals on giant kites for months before flying them to the Heavens on the Day of the Dead
  • Receiving a welcoming cardamom and mint tea at every Jordanian small business I entered. No pressure to buy anything, their desire was simply to be hospitable.
  • Admiring the Colombians dancing tirelessly into the night to salsa music, their bodies intuitively knowing how to synchronize with their partner in perfect harmony

Trip after trip, I realized that instead of fearing different and calling it “bad…” I could see that different was good, just a new side of God’s face I hadn’t met yet.

My friends and acquaintances around the globe gave me permission to be my full self, to be okay with exposing my quirks back home, because that’s what makes me me.

And that’s what I hope for your journey, too.

That these Sol Deep trips will allow you to encounter the light in others who live on the other side of the globe… to see their unique qualities and cultural characteristics that exude vibrancy and beauty.

And that in seeing their light, you’d be encouraged to allow your own unique light to shine a little brighter as well.

No need to shove parts of your personality deep down because you don’t see them modeled around you.

You’re light, so shine. ✨
